Sprout was established with the aim of changing the way Chinese language is viewed and taught in Singapore.
Born and bred in Singapore, and having taught Chinese Language in local schools, our young founders witnessed how the Chinese education landscape has transformed over the years. Today, Chinese Language is seen by many students as merely an academic subject, or to some, a tool to achieve other practical gains. We all know that a good PSLE score is dependent on Mother Tongue, which holds a 25 percent weightage in the total score. Another common example would be the exemption from taking formal Chinese Language lessons if one obtains a minimum grade of D7 in the O-Level Higher Chinese Language examination.

The Ministry, schools and many private tuition centers often highlight creative teaching methods in their curriculum. It is true that we often see young children, especially preschoolers, having so much fun learning the Chinese language. However, the joy in learning the Chinese language diminishes as the years go by, especially after entering the mainstream education system. With the pressure from high-stake examinations, it is no wonder that our children no longer find the learning of Chinese language enjoyable and fun.
Over the years, the private tuition industry has burgeoned in Singapore, especially that of Chinese Language. Almost every student we taught in school has Chinese Language private tuition. However, at Sprout, we do not see ourselves as being a tuition centre. We hope to become a language centre that develops lifelong learners who are confident and well-versed in the Chinese language.
At Sprout, we believe reading is the foundation of language learning. Through harnessing the power of high quality stories and literature, we cultivate children’s interest and love for the Chinese language. We empower children with effective skills and strategies, so that they grow into confident speakers, independent readers, critical thinkers and skilled writers. We place emphasis on the process and quality of learning, and not just results. Most importantly, we respect and accept the unique nature of each child, and strive to bring out the best in every child through love and care, allowing them to develop at their own pace.

Parents are an important part of their children’s language and literacy development. At Sprout, we also hope to work hand in hand with parents to bring out the best in every child. We seek to provide support for parents who are keen to develop their children’s interest in reading and love for the Chinese language.
In order to contribute to the Chinese education system in Singapore, it is also the aim of Sprout to provide resources and support to the Ministry and to schools. While we run our regular classes, our team of teachers will also continue to develop high quality teaching resources and programmes to be used both at Sprout, and in programmes and workshops for educators and students in local schools.
